David C Jones first saw the need for Laughter Mission when he cared for his mother after she was struck by ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). David took her into his one-bedroom apartment during her final six months. As her caregiver, he witnessed first-hand the innumerable positive benefits of laughter on sick people and how it promotes healing and well-being.
In reflecting on the inspiration for the Society’s work, David wrote:
“Often in moments of quiet or in moments of distraction I saw the look of fear and confusion on my mom’s face. I was sad, not as a son but as a human. Making her laugh, I saw her expression change. It became a goal to create new thoughts and new memories, to push out the worry and fear.”
David assembled our first Board, which registered The Vancouver Laughter Mission Society as a nonprofit in 2006. In January 2009, we gained charitable status and were then able to issue tax receipts for donations.
Since our inception we have reached over 3,100 people at over 40 events.
